Sometimes, when the world feels especially heavy, we need ways to spark joy.
We all know there are no quick fixes to one’s mental health, but below are five ways to create little moments of joy in your every day life.
1. Start a wave of compliments
Compliments are contagious. When someone says something nice, it’s natural to want to return the favor or continue to spread the love.
2. Give someone a hug for at least 20 seconds
Did you know that a hug can help lower blood pressure? When you hug, touch, or sit close to someone you love, your body releases oxytocin, which scientists call the “cuddle hormone.” This hormone can help relax and lower anxiety, which in turn can effectively lower blood pressure. Plus, it's fun.
3. Simply make a list of what brings you joy
Focus on five things that bring you joy. Write them down -- anywhere. When thinking about those five things, it will be hard not to smile and feel a little joy sneak in.
4. Spend some time outside
Even 20 minutes of time outside will help spark joy and make you feel more connected to the natural world. Many healers describe the activity of "grounding" as therapeutic for body and soul.
5. Give a little bit
Whether you donate to a charity you love, give clothes you no longer need to Goodwill or send someone a gift, giving is a great way to spark joy into your day and someone else's.
